Our Mission
HaluHalo Journal is an online journal dedicated to highlighting Southeast Asian youth through writing and art. We take our name from the Filipino dessert haluhalo, which translates to "mix mix." In a similar way, our aim is to mix works rooted in Southeast Asian culture with the existing literary and arts world.
Globally, Southeast Asians represent a large and integral community. There are over 660 million Southeast Asians worldwide, and there are over 7.7 million Southeast Asians in the United States. We come from a variety of backgrounds, but our voices are rarely reflected in mass media. HaluHalo Journal was created because of a desire to highlight each of our beautiful and diverse identities.
We strive to create a space where Southeast Asians can express themselves fearlessly and authentically, where our rich and textured identities can find a home.
Representation matters.
